Personal home insurance protects your home from unexpected events.
Insurance that will protect your home, other structures around your home (fences, sheds, barns, etc.) from loss caused by covered perils (wind, hail, fire, etc.) as well as family liability protection and guest medical expense protection.
Depending on what area you live in, common perils that are covered by home insurance include wind, hail, lightening, theft, and water (not external water, though, like floods, sprinklers, etc.). Home policies also include family liability coverage, guest medical expenses, personal property coverage and other additional living expenses if you are misplaced by a covered loss. You can also cover specific personal belongings (such as jewelry, golf clubs, art, collectibles, firearms) for an appraised amount to ensure if anything happens to them, you would be covered.
It is important to note in many areas of the country that earthquakes and floods are not standard perils covered with home insurance. In many states to ensure you have coverage for these types of disasters, you would need separate policies from your home insurance.
It covers three major types of situations. First, it will cover damage to your house and other related structures from covered perils (wind, hail, fire, theft, etc.) This is the most common type of home claim and coverage offered. So say for example there was a large windstorm in your area and you lost shingles on your roof and had a fence blow down, that would be a situation where home insurance (depending on the amount of damage) would be useful.
It also covers your personal belongings and property that might be lost because of a covered loss. For example, if you have a fire and it ruins the furniture and possessions in your living room and kitchen, you would be compensated for the damage and loss of those belongings.
Finally, it covers you and your family if a situation occurs where you are liable and required to pay for another person’s injuries or damage to their personal property. As well as the medical bills associated if a guest is injured while at your home – for example, they trip down the stairs or slip on ice.
